Top 5 Reasons Northerners are Moving to Cary (and Loving It!)
Are you considering relocating to Cary, North Carolina?
If you’ve ever stood in your driveway in the middle of winter, bundled up, shovel in hand, wondering why you still live somewhere that hurts your face when you step outside… I get it.
I used to live that life.
In 2018, my husband and I packed up our three kids (and three cats!) and moved from Minnesota to Cary, North Carolina. It was a big leap relocating to Cary—but honestly, one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
Since then, I’ve helped many others make that same move. And I hear the same thing over and over again:
“I wish we had done this sooner.”
Here are the top five reasons so many people from the North are relocating to Cary—and why they’re not looking back.
#1 – You Can Finally Break Up with Winter
Let’s just say it: winter in the North is a commitment!
And one we were very ready to end.
In Cary, you still get seasons—but without the extremes. Winters are mild, snow is rare, and sunshine is actually part of your daily life again.
For us, it meant:
- No more shoveling snow before work or school
- No more endless gray days
- More time outside (yes, even in January we grill out)!
It’s hard to overstate how much this alone can improve your day-to-day life.
#2 – Life Feels Easier Here
One of the first things we noticed after moving was just… how much calmer everything felt.
Cary offers that sweet spot:
- Safe, welcoming neighborhoods where you can see flowers in bloom and green grass year-round
- Great schools (Wake County school system is a top-tier district)
- Clean, well-planned communities (think pools and amenities galore)
- Tons of parks and greenways (biking, hiking and exploring nature are part of life here)
Coming from the Midwest, we loved the sense of community—but here, it’s paired with a level of convenience and quality of life that just makes things easier.
#3 – You Get More of the Life You Actually Want
This is where many of my clients are pleasantly surprised.
When people relocate from places like Minnesota, New York, or New Jersey, they often find they can get:
- More space (home sizes are often more than 3,000 square feet!)
- A newer home (most are 10-20 years old, but there’s plenty of new construction in neighboring Apex)
- A better neighborhood with hardly any crime
- Features they previously had to compromise on
I remember thinking, “Wait… we can actually have this?”
For many families, Cary opens the door to a lifestyle that felt out of reach before.
#4 – Opportunity Is Everywhere
Cary is part of the Research Triangle, one of the fastest-growing areas in the country.
And you will love downtown Cary, which is full of hometown charm and Southern style, but is rapidly expanding to make for an eclectic community experience. At the recently-added 7-acre Downtown Cary Park, there’s always a lawn concert or event happening. Plus the area is growing with great new dining options like Lawrence Barbecue, Scratch Kitchen & Taproom, and Hank’s Downtown Dive (which isn’t a dive at all…it’s quite upscale).
Whether you’re in tech, healthcare, education, or business, there are real opportunities here.
Even for those working remotely, being in a growing, thriving area brings a different kind of energy and possibility.
It’s not just a lifestyle move—it’s a smart long-term move. In 5 years, our home doubled in value, making it our best financial investment.
Moving your family to a new state can feel overwhelming. You worry about schools, friends, routines—all of it.
But Cary has a way of making people feel at home quickly.
Neighbors are friendly. People say hello. Kids find their footing. Life settles in.
Before long, you’re not “new” anymore—you’re just… home.
